Kyle Wadsworth arrives on the Harvard Campus only to discover, much to his surprise, he's magical. Thus begins his four-year journey to learn where he fits in the world, which ultimately becomes a quest for true love.

Upon arrival at Veritas, Kyle quickly joins a group of peers who become involved in solving the mystery of a seductive siren in the library, while they learn about the magic inside themselves and around them, as well as the secret history of magic and those who practice it.

Kyle's trials and tribulations range from his need to meet the bisexuality prerequisite before he can study sex magic to the fact that the ancient prophecy he translates for his thesis project seems to be about himself. If Kyle is right, he'll need to find his true love, or the world as we know it is doomed.

“The Siren and the Sword is contemporary urban fantasy with lots of hot sex, or maybe it's contemporary urban sex with lots of hot fantasy, or maybe...hmmm. I don't know, actually. I guess I'll have to read it again to decide. And again. And again.”

—Steven Brust, author of the Vlad Taltos series

“I hope anyone who enjoys a great ongoing mystery imbued with fantasy, erotica, love and drama opts to read this and the rest of the books in the Magic University series.”

—Sara Winters; Dirty Mind at Work

“Kyle's journey of self-discovery is in some ways a familiar one. A young man finds freedom in college, finds abilities he did not know he had, and finds someone he likes, maybe even loves. The magic adds a level of spice to Kyle's journey. ... There are many very sensual scenes in the story, with a final scene that is a climax in a lot of interesting ways. The Magic University series looks like it's going to be a fun ride with lots of ... eroticism. The Siren and the Sword is a delicious start.”

—Paranormal Romance Reviews

“This is a grown up, sexy and fun story. Ms. Tan has done an outstanding job of feeding my Harry Potter obsession in a very adult fashion. I look forward to reading her other books in this series.”

—Book Wenches

“Joining Kyle as he experienced many rites of passage, both ordinary and magical, was a delight. It was such a treat to escape to Veritas. Count me in for the whole series, it’s just that good.”

—Manic Readers Reviews

“This freshman novel to the Magic University series is very well written and, although promoted as an erotica, this tale is considerably deeper than your average erotic novel.”

—Bitten by Books

The Siren and the Sword Magic University Book 1 edition by Cecilia Tan Literature Fiction eBooks

The Siren and The Sword ends a lot better than it begins. The first chapters felt a little thin to me and a bit clunky. I would have appreciated more emphasis on Kyle's adjustment to the magical world and the classes he's taking, than his vague feelings of frustration regarding his girlfriend. But once you hit 30 percent or so and some actual plot gets introduced, along with more compelling side characters, the story really takes off. The mystery is not easily fgured out and I loved the dimension the poems/prophesies added to the story. Obviously, the story is far from done and much of the groundwork laid here isn't immediately relevant for the storyline in volume 1, but that is usually the case in multivolume series.

The magical world depicted here is fun and fresh and much more diverse than you would expect if this was just another mediocre Potterverse knock off. It features a decent amount of sex of the m/f variety, and I didn't even skim it, like I usually do. Be warned though, that in the books ahead there will also be m/m sex (and m/f/f and m/m/f/f) and if that is not something you're willing to delve into, maybe best not to start this series at all. You'd be losing out, though, because this one of the best magic-in-the-modern-world-books (with sex) out there.

The one star I knocked off is for the less-than-stellar start of the book and the ease with which our teen protagonist handles his emotional ups and downs without getting all emo on the reader. Not that I am a huge fan of emo teens, but Kyle was just a little too accepting to be completely realistic.

Great Story.
Good sign when the erotica can be left out and it's still a great story.
If you liked HP series you'll like these.
This is truly like what if Harry Potter started as a college student and lived in a more "adult" world where there were courses in things like sex magic. Very fun read, very sexy - can't wait to read the next one!
Exactly as billed, the story was a solid mix of sorcery and sex. As a fellow Cantabrigian, I enjoyed the faithful references to Harvard and surrounding environs. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
Never heard of these but browsing for magic schools due to the SYFY Magicians landed me here.

Such a great start and a very strong sense of place.

Lucky for me, I find these characters quite a bit more interesting than the Magicians opener episode.

In particular, the female characters are fascinatingly complex and varied.
Upon recommendation of a friend I picked this up on my and boy am I glad I did, a delicious mix of Magic and Eroticism. I buzz sawed thru this the first book in the series in a weekend with it's richly diverse and well fleshed out characters. The Budding romance of two of the characters was espescially fun to read about. I heartily recommend this book and Series as I can only imagine the rest get better and better as the Author evolves the characters.

2 Snaps and a Twist to steal a line from the old Comedy sketch Men on Books from "In Loving Color"
I find the plot too unfocused. It's as if the main character is meandering through the story with no real focus until the climax of the book.
I enjoyed the book. I never read the potter books, though did see all the movies ... And this book seemed to run a similar course through the narrative plus the adult aspect.

Four rather than five because, while I most likely will continue the series... I do not feel compelled to finish.

In my view when I finish a five star book, I must purchase the next book right right away.... Right now, I feel like ok, I pick up the next one to see what happens, but will wait awhile.

I think the poetry got to me.... Meaning did not really care for it.... Hey you if it is your thing ... Then go for it.... But it might just be the part that makes me say it is not five star....
