Baby Doe Tabor was one of the more controversial people in Colorado's array of legendary figures grown from its colorful time of mining millionaires and aspirants to a "proper" society in Denver. Baby fit in nicely with the mining people, marrying the richest of them, but society was an impossible nut to crack, that richest miner having divorced one of its "proper" members to claim Baby. Baby enjoyed her ermine-clad life, but it crumbled all too soon. She determined to stay with and assist the penniless Tabor, and when he died, to honor his memory - all of which was a new and unexpected facet of Baby Doe. That saga has been fully explored in the past, but author James I. Metz here provides the first and a thorough look at the girl who became Baby Doe, Lizzie McCourt, in a town that was then frontier, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Here as Lizzie, Baby learned to rebound from a string of heavy misfortunes. Here, too, she learned that success could come by parlaying hard work and good looks. It was in these years that she acquired the underpinning of her life, her Irish inheritance, the Catholic faith. Only this can explain how Baby Doe Tabor could spend three and a half decades in a penitential mode. Here, at last, is the complete Baby Doe.

Lizzie McCourt Baby Doe Legend Begins eBook James Metz Edward Metz

The late James Metz did meticulous primary genealogical research for this book on Baby Doe and her Oshkosh family. As such, it is an original take on an otherwise lightly-covered part of Baby Doe's story and an essential addition to the extant Tabor/Baby Doe literature. Though Jim's style can occasionally be somewhat baroque, even repetitive, the strength of the story he tells and the wealth of detail he chronicles makes this an overall quite readable account.

Jim was unquestionably the best person to have tackled this part of the Baby Doe story. He spent most of his professional life as a reporter/writer/editor at the Oshkosh NORTHWESTERN, which gave him an intimate knowledge of the town and its history. Late in his life he also developed an interest in Baby Doe's post-Oshkosh life and in THE BALLAD OF BABY DOE, the brilliant American opera about her and her second husband Horace Tabor. Anyone truly interested in one of America's most colorful 19th and early-20th-Century characters (she was 80 when she died in 1935) MUST check out this book.

Lizzie McCourt Baby Doe Legend Begins eBook James Metz Edward Metz Reviews

I was looking forward to reading more about Baby Doe's life in Oshkosh, Wisconsin as this is rarely covered in books about her. The author was very familiar with the fires that devastated Oshkosh and the McCourts. But I felt that Mr. Metz didn't cover much about Lizzle. In fact, I was more confused on her family abandoning her in her later years after reading how close they were in Oshkosh. Her marriage to Harvey Doe was barely touched on. Perhaps there just isn't any information on Baby Doe but the title is misleading. I learned about the beginnings about Oshkosh which was interesting but nothing new about Baby Doe.
Finally! The most accurate account of the life and times of Elizabeth McCourt Doe Tabor ever written. Thanks, Mr Metz!
Metz offers a good history of Oshkosh and the life and times of Baby Doe's father, Peter McCourt. But I was expecting some original material on the early life of Lizzie McCourt and none was there. Still, for anyone interested in the Baby Doe legend, the book is worth $6.99.
It malfunctioned on the and I was unable to read it.
Very good, detailed history of Oshkosh and he showed Lizzie in a very realistic manner--- not sensational. The book is historically and it gives a good background study of the famous Baby Doe Tabor. I've read several books about her but I feel this one is the best researched and validated story
A clear rendition of that beautiful Oshkosh (Wisconsin) girl who wowed the men of the Gold Rush, lived the high life in the West and held tenacially as a pauper to the end. I recommend reading it if you like history.
Jim Metz offers a wonderful mix of Oshkosh history to illustrate life styles during the times of Baby Doe Tabor. With the effective use of details of local history, the reader can picture Baby Doe's life in Oshkosh from the early years before she was born up until her unfortunate ending in Colorado. One need not be familiar with Oshkosh to get a full understanding of the life and times of people from that era. Thoroughly enjoyed the book, the only thing for me was getting tangled up in the descriptive vocabulary that sometimes was a distraction. I give this book 5 stars for it's educational and enjoyment values!
